Gottfredson’s theory helps explain the ways in which children and adolescents make career-related decisions. In Gottfredson's theory the job matching process is made up of four developmental processes. These stages are cognitive development, self-creation, circumscription, and compromise. This theory states that when people must compromise on their careers the first I put together a mini documentary for my Career Development class group presentation.

Linda Gottfredson (1981) outlined a theory of career development and career choice which she describes as one of "circumscription and compromise". She perceives career choice as having a developmental trajectory. This means that she believes that career choice evolves within an individual as they grow up in their family and society but she concentrates her attention on the on the limiting effects of socialization in determining career choices. The Theory of Circumscription and Compromise focuses on how young people gradually come to recognize and deal with, or fail to deal with, the array of vocational choices their society provides. After summarizing the theory, I use it to outline a career guidance and counseling system for facilitating growth and reducing risk during the school years. An overview of L. S.
